Podczas ostatnich trzech stuleci, wbrew wielu obiegowym opiniom, nie obserwuje się korelacji okresów globalnych ochłodzeń i globalnych ociepleń z aktywnością przemysłową człowieka. W szczególności nie obserwuje się korelacji ociepleń i oziębień z intensywnością emisji CO2 podczas przemysłowego spalania węgla kopalnego. W przedstawionym okresie najbardziej intensywne globalne ocieplenie występowało w XVIII wieku kiedy działalność przemysłowa ludzi była znikoma. Podczas globalnych oziębień jakie występowały na Ziemi na początku XIX i w połowie XX wieku nie było regresu działalności przemysłowej ludzi i nie nastąpil spadek ilości CO2 emitowanego podczas spalania węgla, co musialoby występować gdyby teoria lansowana na ten temat przez IPCC była słuszna. Jedyną widoczną korelacją jest zależność średniej temperatury Ziemi od zmian intensywności promieniowania energetycznego Słońca przedstawionych na ilustracji jako intensywność obserwowanych plam słonecznych w tym okresie.
