Single-phase outdoor substation near Medford,Oregon. Outdoor substation at Glendale, Oregon. in there, one from Palo Cedro, a point onthe Cow Creek system of the NorthernCalifornia Power Company, and the otherfrom Redding, each of 60,000 volts. Twooutgoing lines, one 60,000 and the other20,000 volts, connected with Keswick andRedding. We found preparations alreadyin progress to receive the incoming linesof the California-Oregon Company uponthe completion of the new power linefrom Castella, a distance across countryof only thirty-four miles, but forty-ninemiles by road following the tortuouscourse of the Sacramento River. That trip from Kennett to Castellaserved to show our party the difficultiesthe companys engineers were experi-encing in building their power lines. Theroute lay through some of the most pic-turesque country in the world, as everyone knows, for we followed the twists ofthat plunging stream which has beenmade historical by railroad publicityagents and fishermen alike.
