Paimogo Landing Beach, 19 August 1808

Summary edit

Description
English: Now a calm and discreet beach, seen here from the “Parque de Estacionamento”, Estrada do Paimogo, at the foot of the 17th c. fort ("Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Paimogo").

In the early days of the Peninsular War, Gen. Robert Anstruther (1768-1809) landed his brigade here, at Paimogo Bay (Paymayo or Pai-Mogo in 19th c. literature), in the evening of August 19th, 1808.
Simultaneously, Lt.-Gen. Wroth Palmer Acland (1770-1816) would land on the 20th at Porto Novo, about 8 km further south.
Both of them reinforced the British Army led by Lieutenant-General Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), which had already landed at Praia do Cabedelo, South of Figuera da Foz, on August 1st onwards.

On 21 August 1808 already, the Battle of Vimeiro put an end to the first napoléonic invasion of Portugal.

Azulejos’s panels, exhibited in front of the Centro de Interpretação da Batalha do Vimeiro, depict the landings at Paimogo and Porto Novo :
