been the seat of the Maronite patriarchs, whose tombs lie beneath thechurch. The patriarchs now reside at the adjacent village of Bdimdn. We again ascend the hill by the same path, and after 23 min. turn tothe left. In the valley below lies the village oi SibHl. In 25 min. we reachthe village of Eawar. A valley opens here to the right, on the slope ofwhich Ehden (see below) is situated. Nearer is the village oi Ban. After 12 min. we cross a small valley; Ban is left on the hill to the right. Wesoon see the monastery of Keshaya in the valley below Mdr Anttn Keshayd.,and reach it in 35 min. more. The monastery contains a printing-office,and also several rooms for travellers. The church was erected in 1860. We retrace our steps, cross the bridge, and ascend to the left. After10 min. we turn to the left and obtain a charming retrospective view. In40 min. we reach Kafr Sdb, opposite to Anlwin. In 20 min. we come to thebridge crossing the Ehden, and in 7« hr. more Ehden itself (see above).

to Beirut. TRIPOLI. 40. Route. 331 From Ehden we proceed towards the W. from the village. After1/4 hr. we enjoy a grand prospect towards the sea. The had and stonyroad next enters (3/^ hr.) the wooded Warfi Heiruna. The path divides(25 min.); that to the left is the better; (8 min.) Murhef Kersa-Myeh is seen below. The path reaches (33 min.) the bottom of thevalley, passes (21 min.) a small valley containing water, and(23 min.) affords a view of Mershineh on the hill to the right. Wehave now reached the hill-country. After 10 min. we leave thevillage of lyal, with its castle, on a hill to the right. We pass(18 min.) Kafr Hatta and reach (20 min.) Zegharta, with its largechnrch, the winter-quarters of many of the inhabitants of Ehden.The path descends hence into the valley of the Kadlsha, which ishere a considerable stream, and crosses the bridge. To the right,on the hill (10 min.), we see the weli of Arddt, and (10 min.) onthe left Hdret Nejdeldya. In 1/2 br. we enter the olive planta
