In its heyday, this was a very busy junction, with 8 tracks in use - 2 for the route towards Newport Station through Gaer Tunnel, and 6 tracks for the coal traffic to Newport docks. Both routes were in the opposite direction from this view, which is towards the so-called Golden Mile. This was a section of track that passed through Lord Tredegar's estate. He charged a levy of one penny per mile per ton of coal. The signalbox was built in 1924 to replace a smaller box on the same site, dating from 1882. |
