Parsons steam turbine of 1903 and generator set at Birmingham Science Museum. Charles Algernon Parsons (1854-1931) devised a high-speed engine for driving directly the newly introduced electric generators. His steam turbine patent of 1884 was comparable in importance to that of James Watt in 1769. The first Parsons turbo-generator was completed in 1884 and by 1888 about 200 were in service. in 1897 he founded Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Company based in Wallsend with £500,000 of capital, and specialised in building the steam turbine engines that he had invented for naval use. The company was absorbed into C. A. Parsons and Company and survives in the Heaton area of Newcastle as part of Siemens, a German industrial conglomerate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parsons_Marine_Steam_Turbine_Company; www.gracesguide.co.uk/Charles_Algernon_Parsons The now closed Museum of Science and Industry, was in a building on Newhall Street, Birmingham, previously the Elkington Silver Electroplating Works. It became the science museum of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in 1951 until its closure in 1997. Many exhibits were then moved to Thinktank which later opened as an entrance-fee-based exhibition in Millennium Point in Eastside, in September 2001. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birmingham_Museum_of_Science_and_Te...
