Description

I am visiting San Francisco for the Pride weekend - one that turned out to be the most historic of them all, thanks to the Supreme Court rulings that legal same-sex marriages cannot be denied federal benefits, and that Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriages in California in late 2008, is dead on a legal technicality.

In fact, California's same-sex marriages resumed two days prior, and this couple, Paul Katami and Jeffrey Zarrillo, was the first to tie the knot in Los Angeles, with outgoing mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presiding, about an hour after the very first wedding in San Francisco involving Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier. In fact, I was able to listen to the Katami-Zarrillo wedding live on KNX 1070 AM radio, as I was driving north out of Los Angeles to come to San Francisco Pride.

The two couples had also been the plaintiffs in the federal case (Perry v. Schwarzenegger - later became Hollingsworth v. Perry when Prop 8 supporters appealed the ruling), that resulted in Proposition 8 being voided.
