Paulette Goddard visiting hospital (MAMAS A44-203-3), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: "Good for sore eyes," "Paulette Goddard, 'My ain't she pretty.' Actress Paulette Goddard visiting 20th General Hospital during World War 2. Paulette Goddard was an American actress and model famous for her roles in Charlie Chaplin's films "Modern Times" and "The Great Dictator." She was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a war-era film called "So Proudly We Hail!" about military nurses sent to the Philippines during World War 2. The 20th General Hospital was established in 1940 at the request of the Surgeon-General and was completed in 1943. It was situated in the jungles of northern India, along a long supply chain road called the Ledo Road. Its purpose was to provide exceptional medical care to the laborers constructing the road as well as U.S. and Chinese soldiers battling the Japanese in the region. The staff was organized from the University of Pennsylvania and comprised of over 60 doctors and 120 nurses. The hospital used antibiotics and modern surgical innovations to treat over 73,000 patients. It closed after the war.
