В семейном архиве купцов Сорокоумовских сохранился уникальный портрет одного из неординарных представителей семейства – Павла Павловича Сорокоумовского (1851 – 1908). Он не был «меховым королем России», как другие представители этого славного рода, тем типом купцов, которых описал Горький в романе "Жизнь Клима Самгина». Он был европейски образованным человеком «нового поколения» купечества, покровителем искусств, художником, музыкантом, путешественником и меценатом. Большой театрал, приехав впервые в Лондон в 1875 году, Павел Павлович более 40 раз побывал в Опере, 13 раз прослушав «Лоэнгрина». Будучи страстным поклонником Вагнера и узнав о бедственном положении композитора, Павел Павлович помог ему выступить в Германии со спектаклями, прошедшими с аншлагом.

Особо следует отметить его дружбу со знаменитым «белым папуасом», Николаем Николаевичем Миклухо-Маклаем, который любил останавливаться в доме П.П. Сорокоумовского в Леоньевском переулке. Павел Павлович сопровождал Миклухо-Маклая в его поездке в Австралию. Их переписка сохранилась и будет представлена на презентации.

Павел Павлович изображен на портрете, как гласит семейная легенда, в костюме венецианского дожа, а создан портрет во время одного из путешествий по Европе с художником из его круга. На портрете сразу узнается красивое лицо Павла Павловича, известное по фотографическим портретам 1870-х годов. Однако, фантастическое платье, свиток в руках (рукопись? чертеж?), темная цветовая гамма отсылают к традиции итальянских портретов XVI века. Редкое явление в купеческой среде! Вероятно, идеей художника было запечатлеть П.П. Сорокоумовского в образе очарованного европейскими древностями любителя искусства, в тициановском духе, напоминающем портреты титанов Возрождения, передав не только внешнее, но и внутреннее благородство модели. Портрет хранится в частном собрании М.А. Сорокоумовской, экспонируется впервые, до этого он не покидал дома владелицы.
