ty KingEdward the Seventh, who was then Prince ofWales. It was a characteristic house party the Duke of(then Lord) Fife had gathered together to meet thePrince. The Duke of Albany, Lord Hartington,and Lord Charles Beresford were among the men;and the Duchess of Manchester, Lady CharlesBeresford, Lady Lonsdale, and Mrs. Standish wereof the ladies of the party. The old Lodge, an odd-cornered, quaint, woodenbuilding, was picturesquely situated overlooking astretch of the river Dee, Round the main buildingwas a series of chalets clinging to the bluff hillsidedominating the river. The whole collection ofcottages formed quite a village nestling round acharming little chapel, a window of which Lord Fifehad dedicated to the memory of his mother. The men of the party were fishing or deer-stalking all day, and the ladies would either fish ormeet the stalkers at some bothy up in the hills andgive them tea. I i Peaceful Personalities and Warriors Bold of gillies in the court-yard of the Lodge, and theslain stags were placed in a row, when, to thetriumphant screel of the bagpipes, in the weirdlight of the flickering flare of a hundred torches anda huge fire of logs, the lucky shots would examinethe antlers of their quarry, afterwards joining in areel round the stags finishing up with a flying leapthrough the flaming logs. Later, a string bandwould play the most delightful waltz music, and theguests would foregather in the hall and dance tillthe small hours. During dessert on my first night at dinner thePrince sent for me to be seated near him. Hesaid— I think I have seen you before, Mr. Villiers ;your face is quite familiar to me.
