I had been ofsome trouble to him, for being wind-bound on theNile I was compelled to land on the west bank,which was more or less in the hands of the enemy,and a search had been made for me. Almostexhausted I had been picked up by friendly nativeswho had ferried me across the river, and I had comesafely into the hands of the Khedival troops, andwas now, at five oclock in the morning, reportingmyself to the general. He grimly returned mysalute and asked me to have a cup of tea, whichI gladly accepted. I hardly knew him, he had sochanged. His face was fuller and stronger, andsuggested a power that was never there in the earlydays. It seemed as if a new spirit had enteredthe man. I felt at once that I was in the presenceof one who was going to be master of the situation
