Description

Pegmatitic granite (6.1 cm across at its widest) from the Paleozoic of Maine, USA.

This is pegmatitic granite (granite pegmatite), dominated by large crystals & formed by cooling of water-rich magma. The dominant minerals in this sample are quartz (gray), albite feldspar (gray), schorl tourmaline (black) and mangan-apatite (Mn-rich fluorapatite) (greenish). The mangan-apatite fluoresces yellow under short-wave ultraviolet light.

Geologic unit & age: Tamminen Pegmatite, Oxford Pegmatite Field, Sebago Migmatite Domain, Central Maine Belt, Devonian to Permian

Locality: Tamminen Quarry, 2.5 miles south-southeast of the town of Greenwood, southern Oxford County, southwestern Maine, USA (44° 16’ 58.85” North latitude, 70° 38’ 23.41” West longitude)
