Commande du collectionneur et mécène anglais, alors installé à Florence, lord Bristol, cette toile est inspirée par la tragédie de Sophocle Philoctète. Blessé et abandonné par les siens sur l'île de Lemnos, Philoctète survit grâce aux armes d’Héraclès qu'Ulysse et Néoptolème viennent lui arracher pour s'en servir contre les Troyens.
