Summary edit

Description
English: Peninsula Barracks This is the site of a great palace envisaged and promoted by King Charles 2nd to rival Versailles. Started by Architect Sir Christopher Wren in 1682, it was not completed by the time of Charles's death in 1685 and fell into disuse. It was used by the army to house prisoners during the Seven Years War and the Peninsula Wars until being destroyed by fire in 1894. Largely rebuilt, although not exactly in the same location, by 1901, it became the base for a number of Regiments, five of whom now have their museums here. The remainder of the buildings are luxury apartments.
