Indeed, the high character of thecontributed articles to the Buenos Ayres dailiesis perhaps unique in the world, and accountslargely for the fact that there are no serious,heavy reviews in the republic. Both the Prensaand the Nacion are at the present time opposi-tion papers. The Xacion is one of the oldest Spanish papersin South America, formerly owned by Gen-oral Mitre. It is of less sensational characterthan the Prensa, but of great influence. Bothof these papers issue special annual editions,which are very bulky and ambitious in make-up.Among the evening papers, the Diario (Journal)is perhaps the best known and most influential.Its editor and proprietor is Senator Leinez, whois probably the most famous typical living SouthAmerican editor.
