Description |
View of the Alexandre III bridge, the avenue Nicholas II, and the Grand and Petit Palais at the 1900 Paris World Fair. The bridge was named after the Tsar of Russia. His son Nicholas II reigned from 1894 until 1917, and symbolically laid the fundation stone of the bridge in 1896; the avenue leading to it on the right bank of the Seine(between the Grand and Petit Palais here) was named avenue Nicolas II in his honor. The bridge is ornamented by four bronze sculptures on high socles, each representing Fame. The two sculptures of the right bank of the Seine are visible in the photograph here, and represent the "Renomme des Sciences" (Fame of the Sciences) and the "Renommée des Arts (Fame of the Arts). The Grand Palais stands on the left of the image, while the Petit Palais is on the right, across from the bridge. |
