| Description |
English: At several spots along the siq one comes across "Baetylus (also Baetyl, Bethel, or Betyl, from Semitic bet el "house of god") are sacred stones that were supposedly endowed with life, or gave access to a deity" (Wikipedia). Rather often one sees not so much a sacred stone as well as a relief that reminds one of a temple, or just a niche, with a space that may have contained a sacred stone. Some may never have contained such a stone, but some other representations. They sometimes come in groups.
A striking one (shown on many pictures) is on a wider part of the siq, where an isolated block of stone shows at one side a triglyphical frieze shows a faced betyl and a smaller one (that may have been a goddess) that have been put there. |
