De Peugeot 504 werd in 1968 voor het eerst geproduceerd. Hij werd iets boven de Peugeot 404 gepositioneerd, die nog tot 1974 in productie was. Ter vervanging van de 404 werd toen een eenvoudiger uitgevoerde versie van de 504 geïntroduceerd, de L. De 504 werd Auto van het Jaar in 1969. De sedan is in de tweede helft van de jaren zeventig ook in Nederland zeer populair geweest, maar verdween begin jaren '80 snel uit het straatbeeld door massale export naar Afrika. In Europa is de productie in 1983 gestopt. The Peugeot 504 is a large family car manufactured by French automaker Peugeot between 1968 and 1983. The 504 was European Car of the Year in 1969.
