PROVIDENT LIFE AND TRUST CO.S HUILDING. The Custom-House stands onthe south side of the street, betweenFourth and Fifth. It has two fronts,one on Chestnut, the other on Li-brary Street, each ornamented witheight fluted Doric columns, 27 feethigh and 4 feet 6 inches in diameter,supporting a heavy entablature. Itis in imitation of the Parthenon atAthens, and is one of the purestspecimens of Doric architecture inthe country. The building wascompleted in 1824, having cost$500,000, and was formerly theUnited States Bank. It is now usedby the United States Sub-Treas-ury and Custom-House officers. Opposite the Custom-House, justabove the Philadelphia Bank, ahandsome granite building, standsthe Farmers and Mechanics Bank,an imposing white marble structure.This Bank, one of the oldest insti-tutions of its kind in the city, com-menced its existence in 1807, witha capital of ^700,000, as An Asso-ciation for the loaning of moneyupon reasonable terms, under thename and style of The Presidentand Di
