Description |
English: Photograph of the skeleton and chains used to gibbet a man convicted of murder and hung at Goulburn in 1831, taken between 1876 and 1877.
In November 1831, John White and William Mooney were convicted of the murder of their overseer Maurice Roach near Crookwell, sentenced to be executed at Goulburn Plains (the place of their crime) and hung in chains. See R v Mooney and White (1831). The bodies were displayed for two years and were removed only after a somewhat-shocked colonial governor (Richard Bourke ?) had the misfortune to ride past them two years later. |
