Summary

Description
English: Photographer at Fort Sumter SC posing next to a mortar of the type that probably fired the first shot of the Civil War. The mortar pictured is a 10 inch mortar, model 1819. According to the data plate at the location it is very similar to the one that fired the signal shot from Fort Johnson on 12 April 1861, which began the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Confederate forces. Many historians consider this the first true shot fired in the Civil War.
