Description

Bergamo Alta Basílica de Santa Maria Maggiore, que comenzó a construirse en 1137 y se caracteriza por su pórtico de mármol rojo y blanco y su interior barroco. La entrada septentrional se llama también entrada de los leones rojos, por el pórtico sostenido por columnas en forma de leones de mármol rojo. La entrada meridional (entrada de los leones blancos), por su parte, se caracteriza por sus columnas sostenidas por leones de mármol blanco.

En el exterior, la Basílica ha mantenido su carácter románico primitivo y la combinación de mármoles rojos, blancos y negros, mientras que en el interior se confunden el estilo barroco y el renacentista, en sus ricos ornamentos y sus notables frescos flamencos. El célebre compositor bergamasco Donizetti está aquí sepultado.
