yyard to Fort McRae. After a bom-bardment of two days, November j^^y,22-23, the firing ceased, but not 22.until the village of Warrington wasburned. Fort McRae practically silenced,and great damage done to the navyyard. The Confederate fortifications onthe mainland surrounding the harborof Pensacola and in front of Fort Pick-ens were in charge of General BraxtonBragg. Still following along the coast in awesterly direction, we come to themouths of the Mississippi. Here, late inthe year 1861, occurred one of the mostmemorable, if not one of the most im-portant, of those coast engagements towhich in this chapter we have been con-fining our attention. On the 12th oct.of October the following despatch 12.startled alike North and South : Fort Jackson, October 12, 1861. ^ Last night I attacked the blockaderswith my little fleet.
