The institution is open daily from nine to four,and its collections of natural history can be freelv inspected.

,THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION. 300 PICTURESQUE WASHINGTON. Persons are frequently allowed to ascend to the top of the Wash-ington Monument. Application for a permit should be made to theofficial in charge at the monument. The view from the top is exceed-ingly beautiful. At the time of making our engraving, the monu-ment was 410 feet high. The best time to visit the great Center Market is early in themorning, or on Saturday evening. The Northern Liberty Marketis also worth a visit. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays there is no charge foradmission to the Corcoran Gallery of Art. On other days tickets ofadmission are twenty-five cents. The gallery is open from 10 a. m.to 4 p. M. It wull be necessary to take a carriage to the Soldiers Home, andto the Arlington Military Cemetery, as there are no regular convey-ances. They can both be visited in a mornings ride, and ought tobe included in the list of things worth seeing. On the way to theSoldiers Home an inspection can be made of Howard
