THE commissioners appointed to lay out the capital city weredirected to procure suitable buildings for the accommoda-tion of Congress, and of the President, and for the publicoffices of the government of the United States ; and, shortlyafter the city was surveyed, they entered upon this portion of theirduties. On LEnfants design the Federal House for Congresswas designated as the Capitol, and this name, meeting with theapproval of President Washington, was adopted.
