The bureau is held in high estimation in Europe, and sev-eral countries have modeled their educational bureaus upon theAmerican system. The statistics collected in reference to educationin foreign countries have a wide range, and are of great value. Anextensive correspondence is carried on, and every year thousands ofletters are written in reply to inquiries from all over the country aboutthe free schools of the South, the education of colored children, thecompulsory school laws of the states, the methods of industrial schoolsin England and France, the organization and management of techni-cal institutes, the normal school and kindergarten systems, the co-education of the sexes, the best training for teachers, and a host ofother matters. The bureau is doing a beneficial work, the extent andvalue of which are hardly realized by the country.
