Summary edit

Description
English: Pier y Garth Bangor Garth Pier At 1550 feet long Bangor’s pier is the second longest in Wales after Llandudno pier. It stretches just over half way across Afon Menai.

It was opened in 1896 by Lord Penrhyn. Until 1914 a railway ran the length of the pier connecting with the landing stage which handled steamers from Blackpool, Liverpool and Douglas, Isle of Man. After years of neglect and consequent deterioration the pier was finally closed to the public in 1971, and, in 1974, taken into the ownership of the county council, who proposed to demolish it. However Bangor City Council successfully applied for grade 2 listed status, bought the structure for one penny and raised funds for its restoration. Restoration work began in 1982 and the fully restored pier was opened in 1988.
