English: This illustration, by French engraver Pierre Eugène Aubert (1789-1847), is one out of the fourteen that were produced for the 1823 work Histoire et description du Muséum royal d'histoire naturelle, ouvrage rédigé d'après les ordres de l'administration du Muséum, par M. Deleuze, avec trois plans et quatorze vues des jardins, des galeries et de la ménagerie. In the foreground, on the middle of the image, there's "the ruine" (in French, la ruine), a folly in the Parisian zoo known as the ménagerie du Jardin des plantes. It is not a real ruin but it embodies one, as a decorative element only. That folly has been kept at the Ménagerie, recent photographs can be seen here and here. In the background, on the left-hand side of the image, there's "the rotunda" (in French, la rotonde), a small building that had been built in the shape of the légion d'honneur medal during Napoleon's rule. It was originally intended to protect elephants and big animals from the cold of the winter. That structure is preserved in the present day too, recent photographs can be seen here and here.

Au premier plan, au milieu de l'image, il y a « la ruine », l'une des fabriques de la ménagerie du Jardin des plantes. Ce n'est pas une vraie ruine mais elle en représente une en tant qu'élément décoratif. Cette fabrique est encore conservée de nos jours, des photographies récentes peuvent être vues ici et ici. À l'arrière-plan, sur le côté gauche de l'image, se trouve « la rotonde », un petit bâtiment construit pendant le Premier Empire et dont le plan est en forme de légion d'honneur. À l'origine, il était destiné à protéger les éléphants et les gros animaux du froid de l'hiver. Cette structure est également conservée de nos jours, des photographies récentes peuvent être vues ici et ici.
