עברית: מקום בו ניצבת הכנסייה שכנה כנסייה ביזנטית שנהרסה במאה ה-7 על ידי המוסלמים. על חורבותיה הקים לואי התשיעי מבנה מבוצר צלבני אשר כונה "המצודה". המצודה נהרסה על ידי הממלוכים בשנת 1264, אך אחד ממגדליה העגולים שולב במבנה הנוכחי. במאה ה-17 נבנתה במקום כנסייה על ידי נזירים פרנציסקנים, והיא שימשה כמלון דרכים לצליינים בדרך לירושלים. נפוליאון שהה בכנסייה זו בעת מסעו לארץ ישראל בשנת 1799. הכנסייה הנוכחית הוקמה בין השנים 1888-1884 בסגנון הבארוק על ידי שני נזירים - סראפין מפלרמו וברנדין מרומא.
