Description
English: Pillbox and paddocks This concrete pillbox from WWII is located in a bend east of the road from Oxnead to Brampton, beside paddocks belonging to Oxnead Haflinger stud. The line of trees seen in the background denote the Bure Valley Railway line. Pillbox (Type FW3/22) constructed in 1940-41 as part of the Eastern Command: II Corps Demolition Belt FI, a demolition belt formed entirely by the River Bure and ranging from Great Yarmouth to Ingworth near Aylsham. By 13 July 1940 14 road and 5 railway bridges had been prepared for demolition (14 road, 5 railway). There are two pillboxes of this type listed in the Defence of Britain database for this location: one on each side of the road, a short distance south of the bridge across the River Bure, one with remains of red brick shuttering. Only the one seen here is still in place, east of Brampton road. Its ref no is S0001278.
