| Description |
English: Pillbox on Burton Common This hexagonal brick-built pillbox sits on Burton Common, above Burton Hive beach. Presumably it was constructed during the Second World War, to keep watch for enemy landings on this western stretch of Chesil Bank. It would not have been a particularly good place for a beach landing - the beach shelves rapidly and there is a very strong undertow (modern signs on the beach advise against swimming here). It is possible to get into this pillbox, through the original entrance on the left, although it contains rather a lot of litter. |
