Summary edit

Description
English: Tapered matchstick lichen (Pilophorus clavatus) grows on rocks in shaded forested sites. The black tips of the stalks (called podetia) produce the spores of the fungus partner. The green color of the lichen body is from the green alga partner busy photosynthesizing and providing food for the fungus. The tiny black dots seen between the stalks are pockets of cyanobacteria that are nitrogen-fixing organisms and are the third partner in this symbiotic relationship.
