DescriptionPinckney Marcius-Simons, Seats of the Mighty.png |
English: Pinckney Marcius-Simons, Seats of the Mighty, before 1904,[1] Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Oyster Bay, NY; oil on canvas, 128.2 x 96.5 cm. This painting was given to Theodore Roosevelt as a surprise gift from his friend Arthur Hamilton Lee of England in 1908, after Roosevelt had admired it in Lee's home. TR wrote a letter of thanks dated August 7, 1908,[2] and in a later letter of March 16, 1909, he wrote to Lee: "At this moment I am sitting in the North Room where of all things that I care for—and I care for many—the one I care for most is the picture that you gave me." (TR, Letters, v. 7, p. 2)[3] |
