Summary edit

Description
English: The Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on the island of Maui in Hawaii (USA) is a wetland that provides shelter to a wide variety of flora and fauna, especially migratory birds. In recent weeks, its appearance became that of a cotton candy-coloured pond which has captivated locals and intrigued visitors. The phenomenon that caused this sudden change in the colour of the water has not yet been identified, but local scientists are considering the possibility that it could be caused by the growth of a single-celled microorganism called halobacteria linked to the ongoing drought in the area. The pink pond in Hawaii is shown in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 6 November. Data from Copernicus missions are particularly well for detecting and monitoring changes in the quality of water worldwide.
