this style, the row of projecting humanheads, carved from stone, with fearful grimaces anddistortions, ornamenting the keystones of the win-dow arches. These were positively so grotesque andvaried that Istood spellbound for a moment undertheir evil glances, as if they carried hypnotic influ-ence. Strange indeed are the eccentric channels intowhich decadent art will run.^ Away before me to the northeast stretched theCorso, resplendent with other palaces at intervals asfar as the eye could reach, — an endless array of shopsand inviting caffes in the ground floors, the narrowsidewalks and pavement thronged with a crowd freshfrom their midday siesta. As I strolled along I found ^ Evelyn, Diary and Letters. ^ Eustace, Classical Tour through Italy. In this palace was preserved till recently one of Italys most valuableartistic relics, — which America can now pride herself upon possessing,for it hangs in Mrs.. Gardners gallery at Boston. This is Giorgionesfamous Christ bearing the Cross.
