English: Battle Plan envisaged by Suffren for the Battle of Cuddalore (1783). In black: the English ships. White is the French ships. The plan was to create a diversion by attacking far the first 12 English ships with only eight French ships and attack the British rear guard as close as possible on both sides to destroy it. But the plan too risky was not used.
Français : Croquis reproduit sur le Journal de bord du vaisseau le Fendant et montrant le dispositif envisagé par Suffren pour la bataille de Gondelour. Les vaisseaux anglais sont en noir et les Français en blanc avec leur nom.
"Ligne de bataille n°3" « Lorsqu’on attaquera dans cet ordre les 5 vaisseaux de 74 attaqueront les cinq derniers le plus près qu’il sera possible. Le Saint-Michel, l’Annibal anglais, la Consolante doubleront les 3 vaisseaux de la queue (passage incompréhensible) et se tiendront très près. Les 8 vaisseaux de 64 combattront à grande portée et prendront de grandes distances devant dans leur attaque occupant toute la longueur de la ligne ennemie. Si l’on voulait s’adresser aux 8 vaisseaux de 64 on hisserait en même temps le guidon blanc et bleu, aux cinq 74 canons le blanc et aux 3 petits le bleu. » Ce plan ne sera finalement pas appliqué et la bataille sera engagée sur l'ordre de bataille classique en ligne de file. |
