Description

Le bétel - Piper betle - est une plante grimpante de la famille des pipéracées, dont les feuilles cordiformes ont des propriétés médicinales. Autrefois au Vietnam, les feuilles étaient mâchées avec de la chaux (oxyde de calcium) et de la noix d'arec, dans une préparation qui était appelée bétel.

La chaux agit comme catalyseur, et l'arec contient l'alcaloïde arécoline, qui favorise la salivation, la salive devenant teintée de rouge. (Commentaire extrait de Wikipedia)

La pagode But Thap (Ninh-Phuc) s'élève dans le village de Dinh To, à 30 Km au sud-est de Hanoi.
