Summary edit

Description
English: Plaque attached to the base of the cross at Clayton. This cross would appear to be an ancient cross that has been rebuilt as a private war memorial. The two sons described in the text of the plaque are listed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as :

THOMAS JOSEPH FITZHERBERT-BROCKHOLES, Captain (Adjt.) Rifle Brigade age 27 date of death 14/03/1915 he is buried in the communal cemetery at Estaires, a town in the Department of the Nord, about 11 kilometres west of Armentieres. ROGER HUBERT FITZHERBERT-BROCKHOLES Lieutenant Royal Navy H.M.S. "Glory." Date of death 02/07/1919, Chief Mining Officer to the Relief Expedition. Sons of Son of William Fitzherbert-Brockholes, C.B.E., and Blanche Fitzherbert-Brockholes, of Claughton Hall, Garstang, Lancs.

The latter death post dates the Armistice of 11/11/1918, but the plaque clearly attributes it to the Great War.
