| Description |
English: Plaque on Somerset Bridge, Peper Harow. This plaque is resting in the ground beside the modern brick parapet on the southern side of the river and downstream side of the bridge. It would seem from the poor letter spacing to be done by someone having no great experience of carving inscriptions. Although I photographed it in two different lighting conditions, I am unable to decipher the inscription fully; perhaps a rubbing would help. I think it says:
THE WEST SIDE AND THE WEIR IN THE RIVER BUILT IN THE YEAR 1826 The word WEIR and the 8 in the date are indistinct. In 1565, the Bridge Commissioners reported - "Somersford (Somerset) Bridge is decayed and downe, and the cawsye thereunto adjoining, which bridge is the Queenes bridge, and by her highnes to be mayneteyned, the stones of which bryda were caryed away by James Bromefelde and by him employed upon his own buyldinges and Peper harowe upon the form of Sir Richard Pexall Knight". Source http://www.elstead.org.uk/history/2.htm This web history also records that brick parapets were added to Elstead Bridge (a different bridge) in 1826, so perhaps work was carried out then on both bridges. However, it is clear from 1600472 that the present day parapet is of more recent, 20th century, origin. The National Archives for Surrey Quarter Sessions record a petition (dated 1716) "of the inhabitants of Pepper Harrow for either the repair or the rebuilding of Somersett Bridge in the parish. With report on the state of the bridge reciting an earlier order for the repair of the bridge". |
