Description |
Plate engravings illustrating personifications of 'Horography' and 'History'. The Horography figure is a young winged virgin with an hour-glass on her head (symbolising the night-time). In her right hand she holds instruments for 'dialling'xand in the left a sun-dial (both symbolising day-time). The History figure is a woman resembling an angel with great wings (symbolising her publishing all events speedily); she looks behind her (symbolising the labours of posterity) and writes on an oval table which rests on the back of the figure of Saturn (who represents Time and Spirit of actions).
