Description

Platyceras sp. - fossil gastropod from the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The gastropods (snails & slugs) are a group of molluscs that occupy marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Most gastropods have a calcareous external shell (the snails). Some lack a shell completely, or have reduced internal shells (the slugs & sea slugs & pteropods). Most members of the Gastropoda are marine. Most marine snails are herbivores (algae grazers) or predators/carnivores.

The fossil snail shown above is Platyceras, a famous Paleozoic gastropod that was coprophagous on crinoids. Platyceras shell shapes conformed to the shapes of anal pyramids on crinoid crowns.

Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Archaeogastropoda, Trochina, Platyceratidae

Stratigraphy: Fort Payne Formation, upper Osagean Stage, upper Lower Mississippian

Locality: lakeside exposure at Gross Creek West, southwestern side of Gross Creek, far-southern part of the Indian Creek arm of southwestern Lake Cumberland, northern Clinton County, southern Kentucky, USA
