These paintings of serpents, but generally in pairs,are frequently seen at the angles and corners ofstreets at Pompeii. They were the local genii *:their emblems rendered sacred, and guarded thespot from pollution : hie . . . veto quisquam faxit oletum Pinge duos angues. Pueri, sacer est locus extraMeiite. Perseus, 1—112. It is remarkable that the serpent was in all historiesmysterious. The serpent of Eve need not becited: a serpent originally delivered the Delphicresponses: it was the emblem of eternity; aswas, perhaps, the cone, or germ, like the egg ofinert matter 2. 1 Outline of a painting, representing a combatbetween two gladiators.
