Description

Fort Walker, Battle of Port Royal November 7, 1861.

Over cropped version of "Hilton Head, Port Royal Harbor, S.C. - A view of the bombardment of the Confederate Forts by the Federal fleet, November 7, 1861, sketched from the ramparts of Fort Walker by a confederate officer. The Federal fleet was comprised of fifteen vessels commanded by Commodore S. F. Dupont. The confederate forts "Walker" and "Beauregard" were splendidly garrisoned, and mounted 43 guns of heavy calibre, under the command of Commodore Tatnell. The forts were forced to surrender, and the Federal losses in the engagement were 8 killed, 23 wounded, while the Confederate loss was about 100 killed, 100 wounded, and 2,500 taken prisoner, with 42 guns. From a sketch by W.T. Crane." This engraving used by and taken from Campfire and Battlefield, Bryan, Taylor & Co., New York, by Rossiter Johnson (1840-1931).
