Description The grapes for Port Wine are grown in the Douro mountains, about 100 to 150 miles from Porto. The grapes are harvested and crushed, traditional (and sometimes still) by foot. The wine is allowed to ferment part way and before grape spirits are added to raise the alcohol level to about 20 percent, thereby killing the yeast early and leaving the wine sweet. The young wine was then placed in roughly 500-gallon barrels and sailed in small boats down the class-5 rapids of the Douro river to Porto, where it spent many years aging in these warehouses.
