Summary edit
DescriptionPorte St Lazare on 17th century Avignon map.jpg |
Detail from a 17th century map of Avignon in the Atlas Van Loon showing the Porte Saint-Lazare. Although published in 1663 this map is a careful copy of an earlier map on 8 plates that was published in 1618. The Porte Saint-Lazare was one of the 13th century town gates and one of the seven gates which were retained at the end of the 15th century. A small defensive avant-corps was added to the gate in 1488. In 1568, during the French Wars of Religion, a ravelin (a fortification outside the gate with two small towers) was add. In later centuries, after the ravelin no longer served a defensive role, the two small towers were retained and the final tower was not demolished until 1935.(Clap & Huet, p. 97) References
