Description
Portrait photograph of French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist Albert Calmette (1863-1933) who was an associate of the French chemist, biologist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895). As an officer of the Institut Pasteur de Lille, Calmette worked with French veterinarian, bacteriologist and immunologist Jean-Marie Camille Guérin (1872-1961) discovering how to culture the tuberculosis bacillus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (also known as BCG or Bacillus Calmette-Guérin). In addition, they developed the first effective anti-tuberculosis vaccine in 1921.
