Portrait of Charles, 9th Lord Elphinstone (1676-1738)

The sitter was the son of John, 8th Lord Elphinstone. He went to Glasgow University in 1699, before joining the army. He was severely wounded at Agremont in 1708, and he eventually retired from the army in 1720. He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir William Primrose, 2nd Bart. in 1702.
