Portrait of Gregory Hawson
Description

The Hawson family of Devon, England were among the first Europeans to settle in the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. Henry Hawson arrived in the area with his wife Elizabeth Emlyn (nee Cowell) and their children in 1839 aboard their own ship, the ABEONA. They took up 6,000 acres along the West Coast of the peninsula, including the area that later became the town of Port Lincoln. They established their first homestead at Kirton Point. Henry's son Gregory (pictured here) later took up land north of Kirton Point and established the Polda sheep station.
