Description
English: Portrait of a gentleman, ca.1615

A full-length portrait to the right, showing the unknown sitter in a white doublet and hose, striped with red, and a wide lace-edged collar. He also wears a black cloak over his left shoulder and across his waist. He stands between red curtains and his left hand rests on a table covered with a red cloth on which sits his tall white hat. This portrait shows an unknown gentleman in early Stuart costume which dates him to around 1615. It therefore cannot show Sir Hugh Willoughby, who is named in the later inscription, as he was drowned in 1553. The portrait came to Greenwich Hospital from the Willoughby family so presumably shows another family member.
