Title
Post-medieval : Seal
Description
English: An incomplete cast lead seal of post-medieval date, circa AD 1700 - 1900. The object is one half of a seal which is disc-shaped with an integral shaft projecting from one edge. The surviving portion of the shaft is ovate and terminates in a worn break. One face of the seal is decorated with a moulded design consisting of a beaded border with a raised central pellet around which four pellets are irregularly distributed.

The metal is a light yellowish-brown colour and survives ion good condition. The seal is 1.7mm long, 14.9mm in diameter, 2.2mm thick and weighs 3.4g.

This object is similar in form to lead kosher seals used by the Jewish community to label meat that had been prepared according to legal requirements however the lack of Hebrew text suggests a different function for this example. The similarities in form however suggest a contemporary date.
